NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following a 47-1 season and the program's first-ever National Championship, the Christopher Newport University softball team received substantial statewide recognition on Tuesday. The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its annual post-season honors, and nine different Captains were among those singled out for their achievements in 2022.
CNU swept the four major awards, as Head Coach
Keith Parr was selected Coach of the Year; senior
Kaitlyn Hasty was picked Player of the Year; and freshman
Jamie Martin was voted both Pitcher and Rookie of the Year in the commonwealth.Â
Six Captains were named members of the first team, and three were chosen to the second team following voting by Sports Information administrators from across the state. Seniors Hasty,
Bailey Roberts,
Maddie Hool, and
Caitlin Abernethy were joined by sophomore
Katie Currin and freshman Martin on the first team. Senior
Sarah Proctor, sophomore
Brooke Greaver, and freshman
Kate Alger were all second team honorees. Â
Hasty, from Chesapeake, previously was voted National Player of the Year after becoming the first three-time All-American in CNU softball history. She was also a finalist for the Division III Honda Athlete of the Year honor. Hasty led the nation in home runs with 19 and set a new program career mark with 53 long balls. For the season, Hasty batted .414 with 33 runs, 53 hits and 12 doubles, and led the country with 19 homers and 67 RBI. She ranked second nationally in slugging percentage (.953), had a .532 on-base percentage and a 1.485 OPS, drawing 28 walks and striking out just 16 times in 128 at-bats.
Martin, from Lorton, Va., was 22-1 with an earned run average of just 1.12. The left-hander tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout against Trine to complete the historic run through the 62-team NCAA tournament. She was awarded the Most Outstanding Pitcher honor in the NCAA Finals, and registered six of her victories in the tournament. Martin was voted the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Freshman of the Year, and was honored as a second-team NFCA Division III All-American.Â
Parr was previously honored as the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year following the program's first National Championship. His squad not only went 47-1 but also recorded a perfect 12-0 record in the postseason. CNU won its first 23 games of the season, and concluded the storybook year by winning its last 24. Parr has led the Captains to 635 victories over the last 19 seasons, and was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year as well as the NFCA's Region VI Coach of the Year. Â
Others on the first team included
Bailey Roberts, a senior catcher from Chesapeake, who hit .358 for the Captains and clubbed 13 home runs along with 42 runs batted in. Roberts was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Finals.
Maddie Hool, CNU's senior second baseman from Woodbridge, Va., posted a .397 batting average while recording 50 base hits and 33 runs batted in.
Caitlin Abernethy, a senior outfielder from Prince George, Va., led the Captains in batting with a .424 average and a team-high 59 base hits.
Katie Currin, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Va., registered a .394 average and recorded nine home runs and 33 runs batted in despite being held to 94 at bats due to injury.
Named to the second team were senior outfielder
Sarah Proctor, from Mineral, Va., who led the Captains with 49 runs scored and 26 stolen bases. Sophomore third baseman
Brooke Greaver, a product of Abingdon, Md., tallied nine home runs and 37 runs batted in in her first season at CNU.
Kate Alger, a freshman pitcher from Staunton, Va., battled injury issues but still posted a 15-0 record and an earned run average of just 0.97 in 21 appearances in the circle.
The Captains were the top-ranked team in the country for the final nine weeks, dropping just one contest all season, and winning their final 24 games. They averaged 8.6 runs per game while allowing just 84 runs all season (1.75 per game).
