Saturday's Revised Schedule
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Although thunderstorms cut short the opening day of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Christopher Newport still won three individual titles during the abbreviated action as the Captains looked sharp on Friday during the title meet at TowneBank Stadium.
Leading the way, the women's throwers came through with a pair of titles.
Katie Stevens captured the hammer throw with a distance of 39.26 meters. With that performance, she became just the fifth Captain to win the league championship in the hammer, joining former legends Sharon Boyd (1996), Leigh Trayers (2004), Kelsey Farmer (2008), and Adrianna Carter (2010).
Along with the first-year phenom,
Mazie Clark added her second title of the year with a victory in the shot put. After claiming the indoor weight throw in February, the senior standout won the shot put on Friday with an 11.57-meter toss. Incredibly, the Captains eventually swept the top-three spots in the event as
Abigail Honeycutt was the runner-up (11.40 meters), while Stevens placed third (11.00).
In addition to her win in the shot put, Clark also scored in the hammer after finishing third with a 37.01-meter launch.
Rounding out the individual champions on Friday,
Peyton Blanding defended her conference crown in the pole vault after clearing 3.30 meters. She has now won three straight league titles in the event after winning the indoor crown earlier this year along with her back-to-back outdoor championships.
In other events on the women's side,
Grace Damewood came in third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.19 meters. Meanwhile,
Alyssa Roach registered the fastest time in the prelims of the 100-hurdles after crossing the line in 15.12.
For the men, Christopher Newport stockpiled points in the throwing events. In the shot put,
Amir Siders led the squad with a third-place showing (13.40 meters), while
Tyler Palmer came in fourth (13.20) and
Dante Ntiganzwa finished fifth (12.76). Additionally,
Joe Kilama earned All-Conference nods in the hammer after placing second with a 47.40-meter showcase. Meanwhile, Siders was fourth (44.97) in the event, and
Colin Sliwa was fifth (41.17).
Capping off Friday's standouts,
CJ Reeders was third in the triple jump with a 14.45-meter leap. Additionally, in the prelims of the 100,
Daniel Fox won his heat and came in second overall with a time of 10.93, while Reeders finished seventh in 11.51.
Through four events on the women's side, Christopher Newport currently leads the team standings with 56 points, while Mary Washington is second with 33. After three men's events, the Captains sit second with 32 points, trailing Salisbury by two.
Saturday's action will begin with the men's 10,000 at 8:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the men's pole vault will resume at 9:00 a.m., and the women's 10,000 will pick up 20 minutes later. The regularly-scheduled action will begin with field disciplines at 10 a.m. and track events at 10:30 a.m.
