ORLANDO, Fla. -- The draws have been announced for the 2022 NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Women's Tennis Championships, setting the stage for two Christopher Newport women's tennis players to embark on their first ever appearance at the postseason championship event. Rookie Raine Weis will make history as the first player in the program to compete in both the singles and doubles events; she will be joined in a historical doubles appearance by sophomore Tessa Trate as the duo are the first CNU pair to ever qualify.

Draws were announced for both the singles and doubles field on Wednesday night. First-round singles matches will begin at the USTA Collegiate Center in Orlando, Fla. on Friday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m. The second round will be played at 2:30 p.m. before the opening round of pairs play at 5:00 p.m. The remainder of the bracket will be played over the weekend with championship matchups scheduled for Sunday, May 29 in both singles and doubles.

In the singles bracket, nearly a third of the 32-player bracket is made up of first-year players as Weis is joined by nine other freshmen. Her first round matchup against Tufts' Elle Christensen is the only of the 16 first-round bouts that features two first-year players. The winner will advance to face either No. 6 seed Hannah Kassaie (CWRU), another rookie, or Sydney Lee (CMS) in the second round played at 2:30 p.m.

Weis was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Rookie and Player of the Year after posting the most wins by a first-year player since 2016-17. Her opponent, Christensen, hails from Los Angeles, California and attends Tufts University. In her first season, she was named a first-team All-NESCAC recipient in both singles and doubles and has compiled an overall record of 21-4 in individual play.

In doubles action, the Captains' underclassmen will have a rematch against Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey from Case Western Reserve in the opening round. The quartet faced off in regular season action this year where the Spartans pair earned an 8-4 victory on their home court in Mayfield, Ohio. Since, the Captains' tandem has rattled off four wins in their last five matches including a thrilling 8-6 win over Mary Washington's regionally-ranked pairing in the conference championship match.

Trate and Weis earned first team All-League honors after posting three wins against regionally-ranked opponents including the aforementioned fellow national qualifiers from Mary Washington, Abby Moghtader and Lauren Quinn. The CNU pair also downed Lindy Cornwall and Bin Zheng (CMU) and Sweet Briar's Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling.

The winning pair will advance to the national quarterfinals on Saturday where they will face either No. 2 seed Shianna Guo/Sylwia Mikos (Chicago) or Nathalie Williams/Crystal Xu (Swarthmore).
