SALEM, Va. - Christopher Newport University begins play Thursday morning at the Moyer Sports Complex as the top-ranked Captains head into the NCAA Division III Softball National Finals. CNU, the top seed, will play eighth-seeded WPI in the opening game scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
Keith Parr's Captains have a record of 42-1, and have already matched the program's mark for most victories in a season. The hard-hitting squad has also set a new single-season record for home runs with 70, led by senior
Kaitlyn Hasty's 18, most in the nation. Hasty, who was named All-America Tuesday for the third time in her career, became the first CNU softball student-athlete to become a three-time All-American. Freshman

Caitlin Abernethy also were recognized as All-Americans.
The Captains are riding a 19-game winning streak, and earlier this season opened the 2022 campaign with 23 consecutive victories, also a new program record. Thursday's contest will be the first ever with WPI. The The Engineers are 35-15 on the season. The other six schools in the field include second-seeded Salisbury, a fellow member of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. The Sea Gulls will play Thursday at 4:00 PM vs. Millikin, the seventh seed. The third seed is Eastern Connecticut State, who will open play Thursday at 6:30 PM vs. sixth-seeded Trine. The fourth and fifth seeds, Texas Lutheran and Berry, will play Thursday at 1:30 PM.
All games will be played at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, and contests are scheduled to continue until a champion is crowned on Tuesday, May 31st.
