Sondra Fan Named State Player & Defensive Player of the Year; Three Captains Earn All-State Under Coach of the Year Bill Broderick

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior guard Sondra Fan (Poquoson, Va.) was named the College Division State Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year to headline the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Women's Basketball teams announced on Thursday. CNU secured three major awards as Bill Broderick was deemed Coach of the Year and three Captains collected All-State recognition as Fan was joined on the first team by Anaya Simmons while senior forward Natalie Terwilliger was named a second team All-State selection.

Fan becomes just the second player in program history to garner VaSID State Player of the Year accolades, joining four-time winner Chelsie Schweers, who last won it in 2010-11. She is also the first Captain ever to secure Defensive Player of the Year honors and the first student-athlete in the state, men's or women's, to earn both awards in the same season.

The senior guard was named a first team WBCA All-American and earned second team D3hoops.com All-American plaudits for her performance on the court in 2021-22. She also was named the D3hoops.com Region VI Player of the Year and the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year while collecting first team All-Region and All-Conference honors.

Offensively, Fan ranked in the top-60 nationally in overall field-goal percentage while boasting a top-five mark in the country from beyond the arc. One of the most dangerous three-point shooters in the country this season, Fan knocked down 43.5 percent from long range and ranks sixth among active shooters over the course of her career. Overall, she hit exactly 50 percent of her shots, ranking tenth among Division III guards while pouring in a team-high 14.7 points per game. She scored 19 or more points in a game 12 times this season and recorded her 1,000th career point during her third season despite playing just over 20 minutes per game in CNU's deep rotation.

Securing Defensive Player of the Year honors, Fan led the Captains Chaos defense with a team-high 61 steals. She helped CNU rank second nationally in turnover margin and is closing in on the top-ten all-time at Christopher Newport with 183 career thefts.

Earning State Coach of the Year honors for the third time in the last four years and the fifth time in his nine seasons at Christopher Newport, Broderick guided the Captains to a historic 2021-22 campaign. CNU started the year 26-0 and rolled up a school record 43 consecutive victories to register one of the top-ten longest winning streaks in Division III women's basketball history. The Captains earned the No. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history and held that spot for five consecutive weeks heading into the postseason. Broderick and the Captains finished the year ranked No. 7 in the nation after a 26-1 record, a conference championship, and a sixth consecutive run to the NCAA Sweet 16. He was named the C2C "Bill Finney" Coach of the Year and the D3hoops.com Region VI Coach of the Year as well.

Joining Fan on the All-State First Team, junior forward Anaya Simmons followed up her State and Region Rookie of the Year first year in 2019-20 with another standout season in her second full year on the court. Simmons was the Division III national statistical champion in field-goal percentage, knocking down 64.1 percent of her shots this season to help bolster the Captains' third-ranked team percentage. Simmons averaged 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, ranking second on the team in both categories. She also ranked second on the team in steals and blocked shots with 53 and 20, respectively. In addition to her All-State selection, Simmons hauled in D3hoops.com Second Team All-Region accolades, first team All-Conference honors, and was named the C2C Tournament MVP.

Rounding out the 2021-22 All-State accolades for CNU is second team selection Natalie Terwilliger. Earning the distinction for the first time in her career, Terwilliger first forward since Sam Porter (2016, 2017, 2018) to earn All-State honors for the Captains. With Simmons, she is just the eighth or ninth front court player to ever earn VaSID All-State recognition for the Royal Blue and Silver.

Terwilliger was a third team D3hoops.com All-Region honoree and earned first team All-Conference honors. She finished the year averaging 10.4 points per game while leading the team in rebounding with 6.5 boards per contest. The Alexandria, Va. native swatted a career-high 45 shots and move into the top-ten all-time at CNU in career blocked shots with 118 rejections. This season, she scored in double figures 11 times including a dominant 25-point, 16-rebound performance against Salisbury that earned her a spot on the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week.
