NEW ORLEANS -- Ahead of her appearance at the NCAA Championships later this week,
Alyssa Roach has been named the USTFCCCA South Region Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year after putting together a dominant season with the Christopher Newport track & field program during the winter campaign.
The third-year standout finished the pre-championship season ranked in the region's top-10 in four different disciplines. For her well-rounded performance, Roach became the first Captain to earn the Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award since Enuma Ezenwa captured back-to-back honors in 2014 and 2015.
Headlining her decorated junior campaign, Roach boasted the South Region's top pentathlon score. She established a new PR while registering 3,165 points during the South Region Final Qualifier on Saturday in Winchester, Virginia. That marked the fifth-best total in program history and slotted her 20th on the national charts this year.
For that performance, she also earned a bid to the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will take place on Friday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In addition to her work in the combined event, Roach also ranked among the region's top-10 in three other disciplines during the winter. She slotted third in the 60-hurdles (9.07), seventh in the high jump (1.56 meters), and eighth in the long jump (5.18 meters).
Hauling in awards for her starring role with the Captains, Roach secured All-Region accolades in both the pentathlon and 60-hurdles. She also came away with a pair of conference championships after claiming league titles in the long jump and 60-hurdles. Additionally, she was an All-League pick in the 200 after placing second in the event during the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
In her career, the Yorktown, Virginia native is a two-time national qualifier, six-time conference champion, and six-time All-Region performer.
