INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- After a pair of dominant victories during the opening round of the tournament, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team are headed to Massachusetts for the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Championship next weekend. CNU will take on No. 13 Trinity (Texas) in the Round of 16 this Friday, March 11 on the campus of Amherst College.
The NCAA Division III Selection Committee announced the hosts of the sectional round of the tournament on Sunday: Amherst College, UW-Whitewater, Hope, and Transylania. In the Amherst pod, Christopher Newport and Trinity will be joined by the host Mammoths, ranked No. 8, taking on conference rival and 11th-ranked Tufts University.
Christopher Newport and Trinity will be the first game in the pod played on Friday while Tufts and Amherst will play the nightcap. The two winning teams will play in the national quarterfinal on Saturday. Game times and ticket information have yet to be announced but will be available on CNUsports.com as the information is made available.
The undefeated Captains are 26-0 this season and riding the nation's longest active winning streak at 43 consecutive wins dating back to the 2019-20 season. The last loss suffered by CNU came to then No. 1 Tufts, 70-65, on December 28, 2019. CNU will face Trinity after the Tigers defeated No. 6 Whitman College in the second round on Saturday. Trinity is 27-2 overall this season and it will be the first time the two teams have ever played.
Only three teams have advanced to each of the last six sectionals and all three will be in the Amherst pod. Christopher Newport, Amherst, and Tufts have each moved into the Round of 16 in at least six straight tournaments.
Christopher Newport defeated Mitchell College (89-42) in the first round and then rolled past Mount St. Mary College (107-52) in the first two rounds.
