Christopher Newport is coming off of a commanding 21-9 victory over Grove City on Wednesday. Against the Wolverines, the Captains broke the game open with 12 straight goals while flipping a modest 5-4 lead into a 17-4 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Overall,
Drew Miller posted a game-high seven points, including five assists. His five helpers equaled the fifth-highest single-game total in program history and the most by a Captain since 2017.
Along with Miller's showcase,
Alex Brendes deposited four goals, while
Dylan Rice and
Brady Altobello contributed hat-tricks.
Andrew Cook and
Robby Adams also added multi-goal efforts, and freshman
Warner Cabaniss won 15 of his 26 faceoff attempts while battling a senior All-American throughout the 60-minute contest.
On the other end of the field,
Max Wayne anchored a stout defensive effort that produced 28 caused turnovers, which equaled the third-highest total in school history. On an individual level, Wayne had six takeaways, tying the seventh-most by a Captain.
Overall this season, Christopher Newport is averaging 22.75 takeaways per game, which stands as the second-highest rate in the NCAA. Meanwhile, the Captains also slot eighth in the nation in scoring offense (19.00 goals per game) and first in total assists (55).
Catholic enters the weekend after knocking off No. 19 Colorado College, 19-14, last Sunday. That victory was the squad's second over a nationally-ranked opponent this season after taking down No. 20 Washington & Lee, 13-6, in the opener. For their work, the Cardinals have continued to receive votes in the USILA National Coaches Poll and currently sit just outside of the top-20.
Through four games, Kevin Crowley has already produced 22 points, including a team-high 15 goals. Sean Baudo also has 12 strikes, while Joey Rockovich has added 11 assists. Meanwhile, on the back end, Nic Pezone has compiled a .518 save percentage and 10.43 goals-against-average.
Saturday's meeting will mark the fifth all-time match-up between the two programs. The series is currently tied at 2-2, while Christopher Newport snatched a 14-6 triumph in the last battle on March 16, 2019. During that contest, Rice led the Captains with seven points, including four assists, while
Will Stockhausen and
Jordan Lee added a pair of daggers as well.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will return home on March 9 for a 4 p.m. tilt against Ursinus.
