NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Adding another exclamation point to her stellar sesaon, Christopher Newport University senior guard
Sondra Fan (Poquoson, Va.) was named a D3hoops.com All-American on Saturday afternoon. After leading the top-ranked CNU Women's Basketball team to an historic campaign, Fan was named a second team All-American by the national media outlet.
The honor comes just days after Fan learned she was the Region VI Player of the Year and a first-team All-Region pick by D3hoops.com. She becomes just the second player in in program history to garner D3hoops.com All-America honors, joining CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Chelsie Schweers.
Fan is the first All-American for the program since Tia Perry earned honorable mention plaudits in 2013-14. She is the seventh different Captain to earn All-American recognition while collecting the program's 14th certificate overall.
Playing in just her third official season due to losing a year to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fan reached the 1,000-point plateau during the season while leading the Captains in scoring from start to finish. The senior guard had a career-year from beyond the arc and finished the year ranked fifth nationally in three-point field goal percentage by knocking down 43.5 percent of her shots from long range. She was the team's leading scorer, with 14.7 points per game, despite playing just over 20 minutes per game in Christopher Newport's deep rotation.
Prior to her selection as one of the nation's top players this weekend, Fan collected Conference Player of the Year and first team All-Conference recognition. She is a two-time All-Region pick and also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District plaudits this season.
Fan led the Captains on both ends of the floor as she also ranked first on the team in steals (61) and was a big part of the reason CNU ranked second nationally in turnover margin. She led the team in scoring 13 times this season and logged seven 20+ point performances, including a season-high 25 points against No. 10 Trinity (Texas) in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
With the rest of her team, Fan helped CNU record the longest winning streak in program history with a 43-game role after starting the year 26-0. The Captains won their third straight conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive campaign. CNU earned the No. 1 national ranking for the first time ever and held onto that spot for five straight weeks heading into the postseason.
The D3hoops.com All-America team is the 25th annual release of the national awards. They are chosed by D3hoops.com staff in consultation with All-Region voting results from players nominated for All-Region.
