HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --
Facing the squad's first top-20 test of the season, the sixth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will square off against No. 20 Hampden-Sydney in a non-conference battle at Everett Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport boasts a 2-0 record, while Hampden-Sydney is 1-0.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at HSCAthletics.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are coming off of a hard-fought 14-12 victory at Randolph-Macon last Saturday. Against the Yellow Jackets, Ryan Young tied the single-game school record with eight takeaways, which earned him a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week. He was also named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for that performance.

Along with Young, Phoenix Hines also had four caused turnovers, while Max Wayne and Campbell Pozin had two apiece. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Dylan Rice chipped in with seven points, including four assists, while Brady Altobello added four goals. Andrew Cook also erupted for his first collegiate hat-trick, including the go-ahead strike late in the third quarter.

So far this season, Rice leads the league with 11 goals, six assists, and 17 total points. Meanwhile, Drew Miller is second in the conference with five helpers, while Altobello is fourth with eight points. On the defensive side, Young is the league-leader with 11 takeaways and 13 ground balls. Additionally, Zac Hanway has a 9.21 goals-against-average, and Warner Cabaniss has won 75 percent of his faceoff attempts.

Hampden-Sydney enters the weekend after defeating Southern Virginia, 19-11, in the squad's opener last Saturday. Against the Knights, Sean Duffy posted a career-high seven goals and was celebrated as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for that performance. Equally effective on the defensive side, Will Perry added 12 saves between the pipes, while Henry Hitt notched three takeaways and six ground balls.

The Tigers were slotted third in the ODAC Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing last year with a 12-3 record and an 8-1 mark in league play. HSC returned 33 letterwinners from the 2021 squad, including Preseason All-American Nick Morgan.

Saturday's meeting will be the 16th showdown between the two programs with Christopher Newport holding an 8-7 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains posted a 16-10 victory on the road. Altobello led the squad with a hat-trick and was one of six multi-goal scorers for the squad.

Following this weekend's game, Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the team comes home for a 4 p.m. match-up with Grove City.
