NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will look to continue it's dominant start to the 2022-23 season with a home game on Saturday night as the Captains (4-0) welcome in Goucher College (1-3) for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.
The Captains are riding a 30-game winning streak at home, ranking as the second-longest roll in program history. Goucher is coming off it's first road trip of the year on Wednesday when they suffered a narrow 81-75 setback at Stevenson. The all-time series favors Christopher Newport, 5-2, but the two teams have only faced eachother once since 2007.Â
Christopher Newport earned a 50-point win at Mary Baldwin on Wednesday night, continuing a streak of wire-to-wire victories to start the season. CNU has yet to trail in a game this season, pulling away from Averett, East Texas Baptist, LeTourneau, and the Fighting Squirrels in the first four games. The Captains have won each of their first four games by an average of 39.8 points per game, ranking fourth nationally in scoring margin in the early portion of the season.Â
Thirteen different CNU players are averaging 10.8 minutes per game or more, and no player has been on the floor more than 19.8 minutes per game so far this season. The tremendous depth has led to balanced scoring as CNU is pouring in 83.8 points per game with seven players averaging over seven points per game. Junior
Alivia Giles leads the group with 10.0 points per game, while
Sondra Fan (9.3),
Katy Rader (9.0), and
Anaya Simmons (9.0) are not far behind.Â
Defensively, CNU has grabbed 75 steals through the first four games, led by 11 from Fan. She now has 194 career thefts needing just 16 more to tie Kim Cameron for a spot in the top-ten all-time at Christopher Newport. CNU ranks tenth nationally in steals per game and fourth in turnovers per contest through the first four games.Â
In Wednesday night's defeat at Stevenson, Goucher got a spectacular individual performance from graduate student Kyla Smith, with 43 points in the game. Smith ranks seventh nationally in scoring with 27.7 points per game while adding 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per contest also. Also at the head of the Gophers attack is Kyani Quarles with 9.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.Â
