Dreugh Phillips Named Head Sailing Coach at Christopher Newport University

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics Kyle McMullin has announced the hiring of Dreugh Phillips as the new head sailing coach. Phillips comes to Christopher Newport from Old Dominion University after competing with the Monarchs for the last four years.
 
"I am excited to have the opportunity to coach at a school like Christopher Newport," said Phillips. "I have raced against this team during my time at ODU and I know the potential; I am honored to be a part of it."
 
Phillips joins the Captains after a four-year career as a Monarch including two seasons as team captain from 2018-20. Phillips helped sail to a first place finish at the 2018 America Trophy and a second place showing at the 2017 Prosser Trophy.
 
While competing in college, Phillips also served as coach of the sailing team at Norfolk Academy from 2016-2021. He guided the team to a pair of conference championships in 2019 and 2021 while earning the VISA Fleet Racing Championship in 2020 and Team Racing Championship in 2021.
 
Prior to matriculating to Old Dominion, Phillips also had an exceptional sailing career at the Norfolk Collegiate School where he was twice named Sailor of the Year. He was named an All-State sailor in 2015-16 and took first place at the 2016 National Invitational Tournament.
 
The Norfolk, Va. native graduated from Old Dominion in 2021 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is US Sailing Level 1 Certified as well as CPR Certified with a power boating license.
