Kyle McMullin has served as Christopher Newport University's Director of Athletics since May of 2016, and has overseen the most successful era of CNU athletics in the history of the University. McMullin been a part of the Captains athletic department in various capacities since arriving in Newport News in 2008.
McMullin has led the Captains to incredible achievements, both on the playing fields and in the classrooms, while developing significant upgrades in finance and facilities. Christopher Newport has produced three NCAA Division III National Championships during his tenure (Women’s Soccer in 2021, Softball in 2022, and Men's Basketball in 2023).
Following those remarkable accomplishments, the CNU Athletic Department registered an all-time best seventh-place finish in the annual Learfield Directors' Cup standings in the spring of 2023. Surpassing the program's previous final standings record by over 200 points, the Captains recorded 902.5 points to secure the first-ever top-10 finish and the highest finish by a public institution in five years. Christopher Newport became just the third public school (along with Wisconsin-Whitewater and Wisconsin-La Crosse) to finish in the top ten in a decade.
McMullin has also overseen the growth of the department’s outstanding facilities, including the opening of Jennings Family Stadium in the fall of 2019, home of CNU men’s and women’s lacrosse and field hockey. He has also been instrumental in the transformation of the CNU Golf Center, and oversaw the construction and opening of the Zodda Training Center for baseball and softball.
In June of 2025, McMullin was honored by the Peninsula Sports Club when he was named the Herbert Morewitz Sports Person of the Year for his leadership and success of the CNU program.
A native of Blacksburg, Va., McMullin is a 2004 graduate of the University of Richmond with a degree in Business Administration and earned a Masters in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 2022. During his time at Richmond, he worked extensively in the athletic department, first in the ticket office and then assisting with the marketing and promotion of all varsity sports.
Early in his career at CNU, in June of 2010, McMullin became Assistant Director of Athletics for Advancement and Communications and took over daily oversight of the department’s communication efforts. Adding responsibility for all athletic publications and the official athletics site, CNUsports.com. In the summer of 2011, he coordinated the release of a new brand identity for CNU athletics. McMullin has also overseen CNU's trademark licensing program since its inception in April of 2011.
Prior to becoming a Captain, McMullin spent four years with ISP Sports at the University of Cincinnati where he worked to grow revenue by building relationships with corporate sponsors of UC athletics. He also served as the primary liaison between ISP and the UC athletics marketing office to ensure complete integration of sponsored promotions, ticketing and marketing. Following his time at the University of Cincinnati, McMullin moved on to Villanova University to assist ISP Sports with their corporate sponsorship program. During his year at Villanova, he worked with corporate partners and helped them utilize their sponsorship of Wildcat athletics.
McMullin and his wife, Lynn, have two children, Caroline and Nathan, and reside in Newport News.
