NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing a rare mid-week mid-day matchup on Thursday afternoon, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will take on the Sewanee Tigers at 2:30 p.m. The matinee will be a marquee game in region action as the undefeated Captains (7-0-0) host the Tigers coming in with a 6-1-1 overall record.
The match was added to the schedule by an agreement between the two head coaches after both teams suffered several canceled games early in the year. Sewanee had three straight matches over a five-day span in mid-September; the Captains lost their first two games of the year and another was postponed for later in the year.
It is the first day game on a weekday for the Captains since October 24, 2018 when CNU defeated St. Mary's College of Maryland on the road, 4-1. For fans unable to attend the match at Captains Field, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
Christopher Newport is riding a seven-match win streak to start the year with five shutouts. Led by this week's Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Haley Eiser, the Captains have allowed just two goals through the first 630+ minutes of action. Eiser has given up only one and boasts a 0.17 goals-against average, ranking in the top ten nationally.
The back line has been impressive as
Re Slater,
Jill McDonald,
Sarah Rhiel,
Nyah Savage and
Hannah Karas have done the bulk of the work in limiting opposing attacks. To this point in the season, the Captains' defense is allowing fewer than six shots per game including only 2.4 on-goal per contest.
Sewanee will counter with a terrific defense of their own, securing six shutouts in the team's first eight games. In one of the two games in which they allowed a goal, the Tigers defeated Agnes Scott, 10-1. Sewanee has outscored opponents 21-3 this season and the defense has posted a 0.37 goals-against average.
Like the Captains, their Thursday opponent has depth offensively, with 14 different players scoring at least one goal this year. Samantha Ferry and Olivia Rhodes lead the way with seven points apiece while Rhodes has a team-high three game-winning goals.
Following Thursday's bout, the Captains will return to action on Sunday night as they host Virginia Wesleyan University at 7:00 pm.
