HOUSTON, Texas -- The Christopher Newport women's golf team opened the 2021-22 season on Monday with first round action at the DIII National Preview in Houston, Texas. Rookie Alex Delgado (+4) led the way in her first collegiate tournament with a 76 and is tied for 15th individually while CNU will enter the second round in 11th place. 

As a team, the Captains fired a 317 on the opening day at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Texas. CNU was 29 over par after the first 18 holes and trails the tournament leaders, Carnegie Mellon, by just 17 strokes .

Delgado had one of the finest debuts in program history with a four-over 76. She led the team in total birdies, with three, and added eight pars in her first round as a Captain. She opened play on the back nine and was one-under through her first four holes. She also finished strong with two birdies and an even Par run through the final five holes of the day. 

Joining Delgado near the top of the individual leaderboard was senior Shreya Ganta (+5), just one stroke behind her rookie teammate. Ganta dropped in a pair of birdies in the last three holes to shoot up to a tie for 24th on the leaderboard. Her five-over 77 included ten pars in the round. 

Junior Lauren Sims (+8) poured in a team-high 11 pars in the first round and is tied for 40th. Freshman Elena Rezac (+12) rounded out the Captains' scoring with an 84 in her first collegiate round. Rezac scored seven pars and was six-over on both the front and back nines. Finally, Cameron Marshall filled out the lineup card for the Captains and notched a par on the 335-yard par 4 17th hole.
