NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The home opener for the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team was delayed due to thunderstorms on Wednesday night and the Captains (1-0-0) will now return to action this weekend with a pair of games at home. On Saturday, Captains Field plays host to a top-20 showdown as Christopher Newport takes on 19th-ranked Centre College (3-0-1) at 11:00 a.m. and on Sunday, CNU will welcome Pfeiffer University (0-2-0) for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
In addition to the two matchups for the home team, Virginia Wesleyan University will also travel to Newport News to take on the aforementioned out-of-towners. On Saturday, the Marlins face Pfeiffer at 1:30 p.m. before then facing the nationally-ranked Colonels at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Live stats and live video will be available for all four matches at CNUsports.com. Links can be found on the women's soccer schedule or at the top of this page.
The Captains have been the victim of three suspended games already in the early portion of the schedule and have played just a single game. That contest was a 4-0 win over Catholic University of America last weekend in a neutral site matchup that saw four different Captains register goals for CNU. It also served as the first collegiate coaching win for
Jamie Gunderson, after taking the helm for the nationally-ranked CNU women's soccer team in the spring of 2020.
Fifth-year goalkeeper
Haley Eiser earned her 19th career shutout and 34th career win during the game as the record-breaking netminder started her 43rd game between the pipes. She tops the Captains' goalkeeping charts in goals-against average, save percentage, and ranks fourth all-time in victories and shutouts.
Entering the weekend, Centre is riding a 12-game unbeaten streak dating back to their lone loss of 2020 which came to Division I Western Kentucky. Against Division III opponents, the Colonels are unbeaten in 35 consecutive bouts, posting a 32-0-3 record since the start of the 2019 campaign. This season, they have outscored their first four opponents, 8-1, with Taylor Gebhart and Brooke Smithson leading the charge with two goals apiece. Starting goalkeeper Jonelle Barron has not surrendered a goal in nearly 330 minutes played this season.
Pfeiffer has yet to score a goal through their first two contests, falling to Washington & Lee, 3-0, and Bridgewater, 4-0, in their season-opening tournament last weekend. The Falcons reached the USA South East Division Championship game during the abbreviated 2020 season and won 13 games in the team's last full season.
Following the weekend's matchups, the Captains will round out the short homestand with a game against Roanoke College on Wednesday, September 15.
