NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking the courts for the first time since the 2020-21 season was capped by an All-American finish from
Reagan Delp, the Christopher Newport women's tennis program opened their fall schedule on Friday by hosting the CNU Invite. The format was played in mock dual format with Christopher Newport taking on Washington Colllege (Md.) Friday before both teams return to the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts on Saturday for more action.
In Friday evening's head-to-head competition, CNU picked up five wins in singles and three more in doubles play. Delp,
Tessa Trate, and Raine Weis each picked up wins in both singles and doubles for the Captains.
Trate paired with
Amanda Yermal for an 8-5 win over Irene Meng and Alisha White and then also captured a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory against Piper Sartisan. Delp and Weis played together for an 8-4 victory against Bin Nguyen and Maria Nazario before the CNU pair also each won in singles play. Delp dropped the first set to Meng but rallied for a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 1-0 (8) finish. In her collegiate debut, Weis was 2-0 with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over White.
Also picking up wins for the Captains in singles action was Anna Campbell (6-3, 6-3) against Nguyen and
Lucy Davis (6-4, 6-2) taking on Katherine Ruppert. In doubles play, CNU tandem
Megan Bauer and
Karina Crivtonencu earned a convincing 8-1 win for the Captains.
