Christopher Newport Men's Lacrosse Hauls in National Academic Honors; Cook, Rice, Stockhausen, and Wayne Named USILA Scholar All-Americans

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Following a tremendous year both on the field and in the classroom, the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team hauled in national academic honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association as four Captains were named Scholar All-Americans, while the entire squad received the National Academic Team Award for its collective efforts during the 2021 campaign.

Headlining the decorated contingent, Jack Cook, Dylan Rice, Will Stockhausen, and Max Wayne were all celebrated as Scholar All-Americans. The four honorees marked the most in program history and equaled the highest total by any team in the nation.

Meanwhile, Christopher Newport also received the National Academic Team Award, which is bestowed upon programs that achieved a combined 3.0 GPA or higher during the academic year.

A graduate student, Cook was named a Scholar All-American for the second time in his career after securing the prestigious honor for his undergraduate tenure at the University of Richmond in 2020. Continuing his success at Christopher Newport, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native excelled while earning his master's degree in financial analysis. A second-team All-Conference performer, he appeared in 13 games as a key member of the defensive unit while collecting 15 caused turnovers, including four during the team's NCAA Tournament run.

Along with his work on the defensive side of the ball, Cook also chipped in with six points during the year. Among his five goals, he scored the opening strike in the squad's battle with No. 2 Salisbury during the NCAA Final Four on May 23.

Continuing to build his legacy as one of the top student-athletes in Christopher Newport history, Rice added his Scholar All-American award to an impressive collection of accolades. A three-time All-American and the Coast-to-Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the finance major led the Captains with 68 points in 2021 after notching 49 goals and 19 assists. His finest outing of the year came on May 1 when he set a new school record with 10 points during a victory over St. Mary's (Md.).

Rewriting the history books, Rice broke the school record for career points (234) and goals (172) during his senior campaign. The Mechanicsville, Virginia native also established the program standard for man-up goals (21) and game-winning strikes (9) during the past four years.

A bedrock on the midfield unit, Stockhausen has been a stabilizing force for the team since he arrived in Newport News. A Preseason All-American in 2021 and a two-time All-Conference selection, the accounting major has remained an offensive juggernaut. Starting all 19 games as a senior, he registered at least one point in 15 of his appearances, including a pair of goals at No. 2 Salisbury in the Coast-to-Coast Conference Championship on May 8 before adding his final strike in the NCAA Quarterfinals against No. 4 Lynchburg on May 22.

In his career, Stockhausen ranks seventh on the program's all-time charts with 123 career points. From 2018-21, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native also pieced together a stretch in which he registered at least one point in 35 consecutive games, marking the longest scoring streak in school history.

One of the nation's top defensive standouts, Wayne has been a consistent presence on the back line for the Captains over the past four years. A perennial All-American, including a second-team pick by USA Lacrosse Magazine in 2021, the computer engineering major has continued to torment opposing attacks. During his senior campaign, he started all 19 games and ranked in the top-25 nationally with 30 caused turnovers, which also marked the eighth-highest single-season total in program history.

In his career, Wayne stands second all-time with 124 caused turnovers. Meanwhile, the Ashburn, Virginia native has also started 64 consecutive games, which stands as the longest "Iron Man" streak in program history.
