NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Kicking off the postseason at home, the ninth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will host Southern Virginia in the semifinals of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Jennings Family Stadium.
Earning the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, the Captains currently boast a 10-4 record, including a 3-1 mark against league competition. Meanwhile, Southern Virginia earned the No. 3 seed after compiling a 6-9 record with a 2-2 mark against conference foes.
Adhering to the campus COVID-19 guidelines, access to Wednesday's game will be limited to two designated family members of each player and coach on Christopher Newport's roster along with a select number of students and staff from the university. Opposing fans and other interested parties will not be permitted to attend the contest. The Captains enter the playoffs on a high note after punctuating the regular season with a historic showcase against St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday. During the 21-13 victory,
Dylan Rice set a new school record with 10 points after collecting six goals and four assists. Meanwhile,
Alex Brendes added five goals while finding the back of the cage for the 20th straight game, which stands as the longest scoring streak in program history.
On the defensive side, Christopher Newport forced 16 turnovers against SMC, including three by
Miles Collins. For that performance, the short-stick specialist was honored as the Coast-to-Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Overall this season, the Captains have 177 takeaways, which rank sixth in the NCAA. The squad also sits 13th in the country with 527 ground balls. Among the individual performers,
Phoenix Hines is second in the league with 25 caused turnovers,
Ryan Young is third with 24, and
Max Wayne is fifth with 21. Additionally, Young ranks eighth with 42 ground balls.
Meanwhile, at the "x,"
Zack Sands has won 54 percent of his faceoff attempts. Overall, his 76 ground balls rank sixth in school history, while his 136 faceoff victories stand as the third-most by a freshman in program lore.
Southern Virginia comes into the midweek battle ranked among the national leaders in a host of statistical categories. The Knights are sixth in the NCAA in saves (240), eighth in ground balls (561), and 10th in assists (130). On an individual level, Zach Danneman is 16th in the country in goals-per-game after wrapping up the regular season with a 4.33 average. Dalon Hampshire is also fourth among all goalies with 218 saves.
On the conference level, Danneman leads the league with 65 goals and 86 assists, while Ty Veres is fourth with 42 strikes. Equally effective on the offensive end, Tennison Schmidt has handed out a league-high 38 assists, and Jaydon Arnold leads the Coast-to-Coast Conference with 177 faceoff victories in 395 total attempts.
Wednesday's match-up will mark the third meeting this season between the Captains and Knights. Christopher Newport captured the previous battles after posting a 16-6 victory on March 3 in Newport News and a 20-14 win on April 24 in Buena Vista.
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the Conference Championship, which will take place on Saturday at the highest remaining seed.
