NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a 1-1 week as a team, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team impressed voters enough to move up in the second release of the NCAA.com Regional Rankings. The Captains are now the sixth-ranked team in the Atlantic South while both ranked singles players and the doubles tandem in the poll all moved up as well.
There was a big shift in the Atlantic South rankings in week two after Emory, who held onto the top spot for the second straight release of the rankings. After that, however, the top six was completely different; Mary Washington slotted in at No. 2 and was followed by Johns Hopkins, Washington & Lee, and Carnegie Mellon to round out the top five in front of CNU at six.
Last week, junior
Reagan Delp was No. 8 and rookie
Tessa Trate slotted in at No. 12. This week, both Captains moved up with Trate jumping two slots up to No. 10; Delp moved a single position and is now ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic South region. Trate earned a thrilling three-set victory in her only action in singles play last week, capturing a 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 win over Washington & Lee's Gabi Moss. The rookie is now 7-1 for the Captains, while playing at No. 2 singles. Delp improved to 6-4 with a 1-1 week last week.
In doubles,
Amanda Yermal and Trate also moved up and are now a top-five tandem in the region. The Captains duo battled into a tiebreaker against Washington & Lee's fourth-ranked pair before suffering a 7-8 (5-7) loss. They then handled Virginia Wesleyan's top team, 8-4, to split their matches on the week. With a 7-3 overall record at No. 1 doubles, Yermal and Trate are now ranked No. 5 in the region.
Christopher Newport will return to action on May 2 as they host Johns Hopkins University. The Blue Jays are ranked No. 3 in the region and feature just one ranked player with No. 12 Anjali Kashyap leading the way. Match time against JHU is set for Noon.
