Christopher Newport Softball Hosts Randolph-Macon for Doubleheader Wednesday at 1:30 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University will host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College for a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday. The opening game at Captains Park is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Click HERE for Christopher Newport's spring attendance policy.

The Captains are 20-8 on the season, and are coming off two wins last Saturday at home over Southern Virginia University at Captains Park. Keith Parr's squad recorded victories by scores of 14-0 and 12-0, with both games shortened to five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Junior first baseman Caroline Helmer was selected the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference's Player of the Week on Monday, after going seven-for-11 for a .636 batting average last week for the sixth-ranked Captains. The Hickory High School graduate homered in CNU's C2C-opening victory over Southern Virginia on Saturday, and drove in three runs as the Captains went 3-1 last week. Helmer also scored twice, walked, doubled, and posted a 1.000 slugging percentage as well as a .667 on base percentage. She became the third different member of the Captains squad to win the weekly award this season, joining fellow juniors Kaitlyn Hasty and Bailey Roberts. Helmer is now hitting .364 for the season with three home runs and 22 runs batted in.

In the pitching circle, the Captains have been led by senior Emily Weatherholtz, who has compiled a record of 10-2 this season, and sophomore Gracie Vallejos, who is 9-4 thus far. Vallejos has recorded 99 strikeouts this season, and Wednesday could become the first Christopher Newport pitcher since Whitney Haller in 2012 to record 100 strikeouts or more in a season.

Randolph-Macon College had recorded a 10-3-1 record heading into a Tuesday doubleheader at Guilford College. Live stats will be available for Wednesday's action at Captains Park by clicking HERE...however, there will be no live video available for the twin bill.
