Christopher Newport enters the weekend unbeaten through the first 19 games of the year and ranked No. 5 in the nation. The Captains are making the team's third-ever appearance in the Sectional round after reaching the sectional final in 2004 and advancing to the national semifinals in 2018. This year's senior class was a part of that Final Four run in 2018, including leading scorer Riley Cook, midfielder Abby Harrigan and goalkeeper Haley Eiser

The Captains advanced to the Sectional after a pair of shutout victories at home last weekend, dropping Cabrini, 2-0, and Franklin & Marshall, 1-0. Those results gave Christopher Newport 13 clean sheets on the season, ranking second most all time at CNU. Led by Eiser and the rest of the vaunted CNU defense, the Captains boast a program-record 0.31 goals-against average while surrendering just six goals through over 1,734 minutes of action this year.

Offensively, Riley Cook leads a dangerous and deep attack with 42 points on 19 goals and four assists this season. The Conference Offensive Player of the Year continues to add to her illustrious career with seven game-winning goals including two more in tournament play last weekend. Senior Sarah Smith joins Cook at the top with 19 points on eight goals and three assists, while Emma Ricci and Emily Talotta have combined for an impressive 14 assists on the outside this season.

Trinity (Texas) will counter with a 15-2-2 overall record after winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. The Tigers hosted last weekend as well, downing Pacific Lutheran in the opening round, 1-0, before winning a penalty kick shootout against Pomona-Pitzer after a 1-1 draw in the second.

The Captains and Tigers have faced off three times in program history with CNU owning a slight 2-1 edge in the series. Trinity won the first, 1-0, in 2005 before the Captains picked up a 1-0 double-overtime win in 2017 and then a 2-0 victory in 2019. This will be the first ever NCAA pairing between the two teams.
