HOT SPRINGS, Va. -- Powered by an impressive second round, the 12th-ranked Christopher Newport women's golf team moved into a top-five finish at the Generals Invite on Tuesday afternoon with a fourth-place showing. The Captains (+64) fired the fourth-best second round score with a 308 and moved up three spots in the 11-team field.
All four counting scorers were 78 or better for CNU on the second day, led by junior
Lauren Sims with a five-over 76.
CNU recorded the seventh-best score out of the 22 recorded team scores over the two days with a 308. The team paired that with an opening-round 324 to finish in 632 strokes. Centre College won the 36-hole event with a 593 and was followed by Washington & Lee (+30), Carnegie Mellon (+33), and the Captains.
Senior
Shreya Ganta (+10) led the Captains overall finish, tying for 10th with a 152 (75-77). It is the 10th top-ten finish of her career and the first of the 2021-22 season. Just four strokes back was rookie
Alex Delgado (+14), tying for 19th with a 156 (78-78).
Sims' used a great second round to move up to a tie for 29th with a 161 (85-76). Finally,
Elena Rezac shaved nine strokes off her first round score with a second-day 77 to finish tied for 35th with a 163 (86-77).
Cameron Marshall also added a 195 (97-98) showing for the Captains.
Christopher Newport will return to action from October 17-19 to close out the fall portion of the schedule at the Golfweek Invitational in Destin, Fla.
