LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Facing off against some of the finest programs from around the nation, the Christopher Newport cross country teams wrapped up the regular season with a solid showing at the Inter-Regional Border Battle on Saturday afternoon at the Gloucester County Dream Park.
In their final tune-up before the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, the 35th-ranked men's cross country team placed 11th in the field, while the women came in 13th. In the men's 8k, the Captains defeated a slew of regionally-ranked programs as well as nationally-ranked Rowan, who entered the competition slotted 33rd in the latest USTFCCCA poll. Meanwhile, the women also held their own in the star-studded field, placing seven points shy of Dickinson, who entered the meet ranked seventh in the NCAA.
On an individual level,
Eric Speeney led the men's squad after finishing in 26:36.5, which placed him 54th overall.
Daniel Ferrante and
Nathanael Ferrante also eclipsed the 27-minute mark after finishing in 26:43.6 and 26:48.6, respectively.
Rounding out the squad's top-five,
Nick Tolarchyk clocked in at 27:01.6, and
Ryan Henderson was up next in 27:32.4.
On the women's side,
Kaitlyn Ardrey made her season debut and led Christopher Newport in the 6k with a 56th-place finish after crossing the line in 24:05.8. She was one of four Captains who broke the 25-minute mark in the competition. Completing the race within seconds of each other,
Madi Rawlings came across in 24:26.1,
Logan Funk finished in 24:28.6, and
Maggie Ralston added a 24:28.9 clocking.
Isabel Hogg capped off the team's top-five performers after throwing down a mark of 25:18.2.
Later in the afternoon, Christopher Newport also took part in the Open races during the daylong competition. Headlining the meet,
Bella Gesick registered a PR in the 6k after finishing 22nd overall with a time of 25:42.2. That shaved 16 seconds off her previous best, which she established just two weeks ago at the Paul Short Run.
Chloe Martin also finished in the top-30 in the Open 6k after completing the race in 26:11.8. That placed her 29th overall.
In the men's Open 8k,
Diego Cobos and
Jason Sangiuliano both registered top-50 efforts. Cobos was 36th in 28:48.6, while Sangiuliano was 41st in 28:56.3.
With the regular season in the books, the Captains will set their sights on postseason action beginning with the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held in Sunnyvale, California on October 30.
