FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- One of only five team's left in Division III with a perfect record, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will put that pristine mark on the line Saturday as they travel to face Mary Washington (4-5-1) at 1:00 pm. Live stats and a video webcast will be provided for the matchup played at the Battleground complex in Fredericksburg, Va.
The CNU women's soccer team is off to a 10-0-0 start for the first time in program history and looks to expand that win streak against the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference rivals from Mary Washington on Saturday. The last time the two teams faced, the Eagles captured a 1-0 win against the Captains in 2019 to halt a seven-match win streak for CNU. The all-time series favors the Captains, 11-5-1, including an 8-0 run since joining the conference in 2013.
The match will come after a season-long gap of 10 days between games. Looking to brush off any rust from the extended rest, the Captains will lean on a potent offensive attack that is averaging 3.00 goals per game and nearly 23 shot attempts per match. Defensively, CNU has allowed just three goals in 10 games this season while holding opponents to just 5.6 shots per game.
Fifth-year senior
Riley Cook leads the top line with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. The all-time leading scorer has added four game-winning goals to her ledger with 35 of her 64 shots finding the frame. Senior
Sarah Smith has added another high-caliber scoring option beside Cook at the top with five goals and one assist for 11 points in her first season with the Captains. Five more CNU players have logged two or more goals while sophomore
Emma Ricci leads the team with four assists this season.
Defensively,
Nyah Savage,
Sarah Rhiel, and
Re Slater have started all ten games on the back line while center back
Jill McDonald has started nine. Playing in front of All-Region goalkeeper
Haley Eiser, the Captains rank eighth nationally in goals-against average with a 0.299 mark. The disciplined defense has seven shutouts in ten games played this year.
Mary Washington will counter the Captains' high-powered attack with the conference defensive player of the week in senior Allison Nork between the pipes. The goalkeeper has allowed 10 goals in over 915 minutes of action this season for a 0.98 GAA and four shutouts. Olivia Severin, Margot Brown, and Delaney Boyer have started all ten games this season while leading the Eagles defense.
Following Saturday's road game, the Captains will return home to take on Salisbury University on Wednesday, October 20 at 7:00 pm.
