NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the third consecutive week there was no movement at the top of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 as the Christopher Newport women's soccer program maintained its spot as the No. 4-ranked team in the nation. The top five remains unchanged with undefeated TCNJ (11-0-0) tightening it's grip on the top spot followed by Johns Hopkins (9-0-1), WashU (Mo.) (10-0-1), CNU (10-0-0), and MIT (13-0-1).
The Captains had just one match last week and took care of business on the road with a 3-0 victory at Salisbury University. The win extended the Captains' record winning streak to start a season to 10 games with just five games left on the regular season schedule. With the win against Salisbury, first-year head coach
Jamie Gunderson passed CNU softball coach
Keith Parr for second on the all-time list at Christopher Newport for consecutive wins to start a career and trails only
Bill Broderick of CNU women's basketball with a 13-0 run to start his tenure.
At this point in the season, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team is one of just six teams remaining in Division III with a perfect record. There are only eight women's teams in all of the NCAA without a loss or a tie as Division I Florida State (13-0-0) and Division II Lee (9-0-0) join the sextet of Division III programs that includes CNU.
Pairing an exceptional offense with a dominating defense, the Captains rank 40th nationally in goals per game (3.00) while also featuring a top-20 defense ranking 11th in goals-against average (0.299) and 16th in shutout percentage (0.700). Eleven different players have scored a goal for the Captains through the first 10 games and seven of them have found the back of the net more than once.
This week, Christopher Newport will play on Saturday, October 16 at the University of Mary Washington (4-5-1) at 1:00 pm. Live stats and video will be available, courtesy of the Mary Washington Department of Athletics.
