CAPTAINS COACHES CORNER Debuts With Cross Country Coach Danny Feldman

Captains Coaches Corner premiers featuring a discussion with Christopher Newport cross country coach Danny Feldman, who is in his second year leading the Captains. Feldman also serves as a track & field assistant and has an extensive résumé filled with championship-level experience at multiple NCAA institutions.

Feldman and his entire cross country coaching staff were celebrated for its work during the 2019 campaign as the group was named the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year. They led the Captains to the CAC Championship last fall and captured the CAC title in early November in Pennsylvania. During the competition, Feldman's crew edged out three-time defending champion York (Pa.) by four points in the final standings. It marked the program's first league title since Christopher Newport ripped off three in a row from 2013-15.

Feldman, previously an assistant coach at Amherst, has helped guide three different schools to podium finishes at the NCAA Championships. During his most recent stint with the Mammoths, he assisted the men's cross country team place fourth at the 2017 national meet before finishing sixth during the 2018 competition. Over his two years, the Amherst men laid claim to a pair of NESCAC Championships while also grabbing the 2018 New England Regional title. On an individual level, Feldman helped coach six All-Americans across both genders during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

In addition to his efforts at Amherst, Feldman also served as an assistant coach at Washington University in St. Louis during the 2014-15 campaign. Along with his work at the Division III level, Feldman assisted with the cross country and track & field programs at Northern Arizona during the 2013-14 season. He also boasts extensive experience as a successful high school head coach. Most recently, he oversaw the cross country and track & field programs at Covenant of the Sacred Heart in New York from 2015-17. During that time, he coached back-to-back runner-up finishes at the New York State Championships while also serving as the conference's track & field commissioner. Feldman's coaching career began in 2012 when he spent a year as the head track & field coach at Amherst Regional High School. During that time, his student-athletes broke four school records.

Prior to his professional career, Feldman competed in track & field at Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington. He graduated in 2010 with bachelor's degrees in Business Management and German before earning his master's in Community Health Education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2013.
