CNU Hall of Famer Chelsie Schweers Named to D3hoops.com All-Decade Team

Complete All-Decade Team

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- One of Division III's all-time great talents and Christopher Newport University alumna Chelsie Schweers was named to the D3hoops.com All-Decade Team on Monday morning. Despite playing just one season in the 10-year span being recognized, Schweers did enough to garner first team All-Decade Team honors by the national media source dedicated to covering Division III basketball.

Schweers was one of just two guards listed on the first team with Thomas More's Sydney Moss capturing the other backcourt spot. The rest of the first team was filled by forwards Madison Temple, also from Thomas More, Melissa Tobie out of Montclair State, and center Carissa (Verkaik) Ratliff from Calvin. In total, 25 players were honored across first-, second-, third-, fourth-, and honorable mention teams.

Inarguably one of the finest scorers in the history of collegiate women's basketball, Schweers concluded her career ranking second all-time in Division III with 2,869 points. That mark ranks in the top-25 all-time across all three divisions while her outside shooting prowess led the way with a record-breaking stroke from beyond the arc. The all-time leader in three-point field goals made over a career and season at Division III, she ranked second in NCAA history at the conclusion of her career and still lists tied for sixth all-time.

In the only year she played during the 2010-20 decade, Schweers helped lead the Captains to the first national semifinals appearance in Christopher Newport history. As a senior she earned National Player of the Year honors to cap one of the most decorated careers in CNU athletics history. Playing between 2007-11, the left-handed guard put together one of the greatest careers in the history of Division III women's basketball.

She burst onto the scene as a rookie, scoring what was at the time, the fourth most points by a freshman in Division III history, with 604 in the 2007-08 season. She became just the second CNU freshman to collect All-American honors and was the first player in USA South Athletic Conference history to earn both Rookie and Player of the Year honors. She would go on to earn South Region Rookie of the Year, as well as Virginia State Player and Rookie of the Year plaudits while also collecting first team All-Conference honors.

Over the next three years, Schweers would never slow down, earning first team All-Conference honors all four years. Accolades poured in year-after-year, as she was a four-time VaSID State Player of the Year, three-time Conference Player of the Year, two-time Region Player of the year, and three-time conference tournament MVP. She earned Honorable Mention All-America designation as a freshman and sophomore, and was named both a WBCA and D3hoops.com First Team All-American in each of her last two seasons.

A team leader for one of the most historic runs in program history, Schweers and the Captains won 103 games in her four year career, including three NCAA Tournament appearances. During her junior campaign, the Captains opened the season with a program-record 30-0 start before suffering their only loss of the year in the NCAA Sweet 16. The team would follow that success up with a 30-4 record in her senior year, dancing all the way to the national semifinals.

In the CNU record book, Schweers is the all-time leader in both free-throw shooting percentage and three-point shooting percentage, while ranking fifth all-time in overall field goal percentage. She ranks sixth in career steals, seventh in assists, and notched four of the top eight best single season scoring averages in program history. She registered nine games with 35 points or more, including a career-high 40-point effort at Meredith on January 30, 2011. For her career, she averaged 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 steals, and 2.8 assists per game.

Following graduation, she became the first CNU women's player to play professionally overseas, earning multiple honors for her play in Greece, Iceland and Australia. She has earned a number of professional honors, including Most Valuable Player for the Ipswich Force of the Queensland Basketball League in Australia. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Schweers was slated to play her eighth professional season in Australia this spring.

Schweers was inducted into the CNU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.
