NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's women's athletic teams won more than any other in the commonwealth during the 2019-2020 season. The news was announced Friday by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) as the organization released its annual statewide survey of Division III programs.
The Captains won 74.4 percent of their women's contests during the season, posting a 99-33-3 record. Women's Soccer (16-3-3), Volleyball (27-9), Field Hockey (14-5), Women's Basketball (25-4), and Softball (12-1) led the way as Christopher Newport edged out Washington & Lee for the top spot.
On the men's side, Christopher Newport teams finished third in the state after recording a record of 56-26-5 for a 67.2 percent winning clip. Men's Soccer (14-2-5), Men's Basketball (23-6), Baseball (10-4), and Men's Lacrosse (5-1) enjoyed the most success.
Overall, Christopher Newport squads registered a record of 155-59-8 for a 71.6 winning percentage, finishing third in the state behind Washington & Lee and Randolph-Macon.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
