2019-20 Postgraduate Scholarship Women Awardees - FALL
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Christopher Newport University midfielder
Carson Pokorny has added to her illustrious list of career accomplishments with one of the most prestigious honors awarded by the NCAA, a postgraduate scholarship.Â
Pokorny is the first Christopher Newport student-athlete to be named one of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. Each of the players who received this year's honor will be awarded a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship. Pokorny has already committed to attend the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. and aspires to become a physician.Â
The Christopher Newport senior is one of seven women's soccer players at all different levels of the NCAA on the 21-woman NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship list. She is one of two student-ahletes from the Capital Athletic Conference on the 2019-20 list released by the NCAA for fall sports. Pokorny was joined by Salisbury University's Arielle Johnston (Field Hockey) to represent the conference.Â
The three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American earned the scholarship after an exceptional career on and off the pitch for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team. Her impressive academic achievements include a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average while studying toward a degree in Biochemistry. She was named the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year following her senior season, adding to a bevy of individual academic awards. A three-time Academic All-Conference pick and three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District first team honoree, she was also the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Elite 90 award winner at the 2018 championships.Â
On the field, the Williamsburg, Va. native is the all-time leader in career assists, breaking the record during her final campaign in which she finished with 10 points on two goals and six assists. Her sixth and final helper came on the game-winning goal in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Worcester State and pushed her passed Victoria Perry to the top of the all-time chart with 32 career assists. She wrapped up her career with 72 points on 20 goals and 32 assists, ranking eighth all-time in career scoring at Christopher Newport.Â
Over the course of her career, Pokorny helped the nationally-ranked Captains reach new heights, including the 2018 national semifinals appearance. The team was 73-9-5 over the last four seasons for a winning percentage of 86.8%.Â
