NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will don pink uniforms and honor breast cancer survivors as part of the annual Play4Kay charity event. Tip off against the Seahawks (3-18, 0-7) is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center as the Captains attempt to add to their ten-game winning streak.
Christopher Newport is 18-4 overall and 7-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference after clinching the third regular season title in the last four years with a win on the road at York (Pa.) in their last outing. The Captains will play three more regular season games, starting with Wednesday night's matchup with the Seahawks, before hosting the CAC Semifinal round on February 26.
The conference game will feature the Captains wearing pink uniforms and socks as Zeta Tau Alpha, a Christopher Newport sorority whose philanthropy is breast cancer awareness, raises money for the cause throughout the contest. Also, during halftime of the game, the Department of Athletics will honor and induct the newest class of Chi Alpha Sigma, the student-athlete honor society.
Christopher Newport won the first game against St. Mary's (Md.) this season by a final score of 99-51 on January 29 in Maryland. The Captains improved to 25-3 all-time against the Seahawks with 19 straight victories in the matchup. Under head coach
Bill Broderick, Christopher Newport is 16-0 against St. Mary's (Md.) with an 8-0 mark in the Freeman Center.
With eleven different players averaging over 10 minutes per game this season, the Captains' depth has been the driving force to their success in 2019-20. Only one player is averaging 20 minutes per game, in starting forward
Julia Ng, and the constant rotation continues to wear down opposing offenses to the tune of nearly 30 turnovers forced per game. Junior
Bailey Hodges, with 46 steals, and sophomore
Sondra Fan, with 45, lead a ball-hawking defense that has grabbed 368 steals already this season. With a minimum of four games remaining, the Captains defense is just 40 thefts shy of a top-ten single season performance as team.
Fan also leads the offense with 12.2 points per game and is closing in on 600 career points in her second season. She has scored 586 career points through her first 53 games as a Captain and would become the first sophomore to reach the 600-point plateau since Jessica Moore in 2007-09. The sophomore from Poquoson, Va. has scored double figures in all but four games and has a streak of six straight heading into Wednesday night.
St. Mary's (Md.) ranks second in the conference in turnovers forced per game and is coming off a game that saw the Seahawks take a halftime lead against Mary Washington before falling to the Eagles in the second half. Senior Gina Seifert is leading the St. Mary's squad with 12.7 points per game while shooting over 40% from the field. Junior Kyaira Priest is the only other Seahawk averaging double figures with 10.4 points per game while also leading the squad in assists with 2.8 per game.
