NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Both Christopher Newport basketball teams will look to add to long win streaks on Saturday afternoon as part of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against Mary Washington. In addition to the considerable weight of the matchups on the court, the Captains will also induct the 2020 CNU Athletics Hall of Fame class during halftime of the men's game Saturday, adding to the momentous weekend at the Freeman Center.
Tip-off time for the women's game against the Eagles is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. followed by a tentative 4:00 p.m. matchup between the two men's programs. Tickets are still available for the doubleheader action and the Freeman Center box office will be open Saturday for fans attending the critical conference clash. For fans unable to attend, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
First up, the Christopher Newport women's team will look to add to an eight-game winning streak against the Eagles who are coming off a pivotal win versus Southern Virginia. Entering Saturday's battle, the Captains have won six of the last seven against Mary Washington, including a 63-37 win at Rosner Arena on January 18 of this year. The all-time series favors Christopher Newport, 33-21.
The Captains come into Saturday's game ranking 8th nationally in scoring offense by pouring in 80.6 points per game. Five players finished in double figures in a 99-51 thrashing of St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday night, marking the seventh game of 90+ points scored this season. Sophomore
Natalie Terwilliger leads the team with 12.1 points and ranks second on the team in rebounding with 6.0 rebounds per game. Sophomore
Sondra Fan is also adding 10.4 points per game while leading the Captains Chaos defense with 41 steals.
Mary Washington will counter with a young lineup that focuses on defense, holding opponents to 55.0 points per game. The Eagles have dropped three of the last four games but picked up a pivotal win against Southern Virginia, 58-53, on Wednesday night. Junior Madison Shifflett leads the team with 13.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season while Tory Martin is adding 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
On the men's side, the Captains will have to contend with an Eagles squad coming off a decisive home victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday night. Mary Washington improved to 12-8 overall, 2-3 in league action when junior Drew Johnson had a historic shooting performance from three-point land, going 13-for-14 to set a school and conference record for made triples in a game. Johnson is one of five Eagles averaging double figures this season, led by sophomore Greg Rowson with 17.2 points per game. Johnson ranks second with 13.1 points per game while Da'Shawn Cook (11.8 ppg), Riley Welch (11.8 ppg), and Trey Barber (10.8 ppg) round out the top scorers for Mary Washington.
Christopher Newport enters the game riding a nine-game winning streak dating back to December 28. The Captains are 16-4 overall, 5-0 in CAC action, and currently lead the conference standings alone in first place. Powered by an offense capable of big numbers and a defense that ranks among the best in the nation holding opponents to just 66.5 points per game, the Captains have outscored their foes by an average of 22.3 points during the curent win streak.
Senior Dalon McHugh II and junior Jason Aigner are the only two Captains averaging double figures in the well-balanced offense. McHugh is scoring 12.3 points and grabbing 7.2 rebounds per game while Aigner is tacking on a team-high 12.4 points to go with over three triples per game on average. Seniors Nick Parks, at 51.5%, and Luther Gibbs, at 53.7%, have been the most efficient scorers for the Captains this season and have combined for 13.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
At halftime of the men's game, the Christopher Newport Department of Athletics will induct a group of seven Hall of Famers. They are: Gretchen Jewell (Cheerleading),
Marlene Lichty (Field Hockey), Ashton Marshall (Women's Lacrosse), Sean Moriarty (Men's Soccer), Richard Roethel (Men's Track & Field), Steve Shaw (Men's Soccer-Coach), and Judy Stenzhorn (CNU Athletics Administrator).
Following the action on Saturday, the Captains men's team will return to action on Wednesday, February 5 on the road at St. Mary's (Md.), the CNU women will next play on the road as part of a CAC Doubleheader at York (Pa.) on Saturday, February 8.
