Junior Riley Cook Named Women's Soccer Conference Player of the Week After Record-Breaking Performance

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After a memorable week on the field, Christopher Newport junior Riley Cook was announced as the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for a second consecutive release. Cook was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week for her performance a week ago and followed up that effort with a historical campaign this week.

The certificate was the second of the season for Cook and her eighth career Conference Player of the Week recognition.

Cook scored five of the six Captains' goals this week and in the process became the program's all-time leading scorer. She continues to re-write the record book as she led Christopher Newport to a 1-1 draw against perennial power Lynchburg before racing past York College of Pennsylvania in the CAC opener, 5-0.

First last week, Cook tied the career points record with a game-tying goal against Lynchburg to help ensure the Captains record remained unscathed. That goal put her atop the career goals scored chart at Christopher Newport, passing Emma O'Reilly. Then, in the conference opener against York, Cook logged one of the finest individual performances in program history with a record-tying four goals.

The first tally against the Spartans broke the career points record at Christopher Newport, passing Victoria Perry, and the next three only added to her historical effort. She became one of only three players to score four goals in a game, tying the record set by Alison Burr-Miller in 2003 and matched by Hillary Carney in 2006. When she scored her third goal, she officially registered her third career hat trick to become one of only four players to deliver as many hat tricks in her career.

The impressive performance raised Cook's career line to 53 career goals and 11 assists over 51 games for a new standard of 117 career points. She currently ranks ninth nationally in total points (27) and fourth in total goals (13) this season. Cook has now scored an average of 2.29 points per game in her career, ranking 7th in Division III among active players and 8th across all three NCAA Divisions. Including Division I, II, and III players, she also ranks in the top-ten nationally for goals per game, with 1.04.

Cook and the rest of the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will return to action on Wednesday, October 2 at 6:00 pm as they host Southern Virginia University.
