Third-Ranked Captains Host York (Pa.) in Capital Athletic Conference Opener Saturday Evening

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will start conference play on Saturday evening, hosting York College of Pennsylvania at 5:00 pm. The Captains (7-0-2) face the Spartans (3-6-0) at Captains Field as the front end of a soccer doubleheader with the men's game immediately following.

For fans who can not attend live, live statistics and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com. Links can be found on the women's soccer schedule.

The Captains are coming off a 1-1 tie against the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night to close out non-conference action. The goal scored by the Hornets was just the second surrendered by the vaunted Christopher Newport defense and it was just the third time the Captains had been held to just a single goal offensively this season. Still, the Captains record is unscathed with a 7-0-2 overall record, including an unbeaten mark in four home games.

York College opened the season just 1-5-0 but has bounced back to win two of the last three games. After a 3-0 win against Marywood, the Spartans managed an impressive showing against 10th-ranked TCNJ with a 1-0 setback. York comes into Saturday with a 2-1 win over Elizabethtown in their last contest.

Junior Riley Cook leads the offense with 19 points on 9 goals and 1 assist so far this season while sophomore Emily Talotta ranks second with 9 points on 3 goals and 3 assists. Both factored into the goal against Lynchburg on Wednesday night.

The York offense has scored 16 goals in nine games this season with Natalie McCarthy leading the charge with 9 points on 3 goals and 3 assists. Jenna Terenchin has added three goals and Georgia Gilchrist has two goals and two assists as the pair are tied for second with six points apiece.

This season, the CAC schedule will feature a double round-robin format as the Captains face each team twice in home-and-home series. Christopher Newport takes on York at home Saturday evening before making the return trip to Pennsylvania on October 26. Christopher Newport owns a 6-0-1 advantage in the all-time series.
