VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Playing their third game on the same field in five days, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will stay out on the road Tuesday to take on Virginia Wesleyan University (2-0-0) at 7:30 p.m.
The Captains and Marlins each picked up a pair of 4-0 shutouts in the Virginia Wesleyan season-opening tournament against Westfield State and Luther College. Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan each reached the NCAA Tournament last season with the Marlins advancing to the second round of the postseason and the Captains advancing to the national semifinals.
In the season-opening weekend, Christopher Newport was led by junior
Riley Cook with two goals and an assist for 5 points while sophomore
Karina Vasquez added a pair of goals. Ten Captains have already scored at least one point in the young season while the defense has earned a pair of shutouts.
The all-time series favors the Marlins, 13-7-4, but the Captains are 3-1-2 against the cross-water rivals since head coach
Dan Weiler took the reins in 2013. Last season, the two teams matched up at Captains Field with Christopher Newport capturing a 5-0 win.
This season, Virginia Wesleyan was led by Reina Araujo with three goals and Alex Davidson added a pair against Luther College.
