NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- This weekend the Christopher Newport women's tennis team welcomed in a pair of NCAA Division I opponents alongside one Division I foe for tournament action at the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts. The Captains played well in all three matches, specifically in doubles action where the home team went all nine bouts scheduled in the tournament.
The Captains faced the three teams in a mock dual format that saw Christopher Newport sweep doubles action first against N.C. Wesleyan, then Norfolk State, and finally on Sunday against Hampton University. Leading the way was veteran tandem
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Kara Ferner on the top line, capturing three wins together. First, against N.C. Wesleyan, the duo earned an 8-7 win over Fariza Abdullueva and Juliana Johnson; then, versus Norfolk State and Hampton, the Captains tandem won both matches, 6-1.
Helped Christopher Newport earn the doubles sweep was the No. 2 pairing of
Olivia Reed and
Amanda Yermal, picking up an 8-4 win against the Bishops, 6-4 victory versus the Spartans, and a 6-2 showing while taking on Hampton University.
Ana Clara Borga played all three matches at No. 3 with two wins while playing with
Reagan Delp and one with
Maygan Brewer by her side.
In singles action, the Captains cruised through the N.C. Wesleyan lineup with five wins and picked up a combined six victories in the two matches against Norfolk State and Hampton.
Christopher Newport will return to action next weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships. Matches will be held in Fredericksburg, Va. from September 20-23.
