FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- For the first time since joining the Capital Athletic Conference in 2013-14, over 200 Christopher Newport student-athletes were recognized for their success in the classroom as members of the CAC All-Academic Team. The Captains placed a program record 204 on the All-Academic squad while shattering the previous mark with nearly 52% of the student-athlete population earning the esteemed recognition. 

The total number of Christopher Newport All-Academic selections has gone up in each of the last five seasons, setting the program record in four straight years. The 2018-19 academic year marks the first time the Captains have registered over 200 athletes on the All-Academic team and the first time over 50% of the student body was recognized. 

As a conference, 1,445 total student-athletes earned CAC All-Academic certificates. A total of 51% of all student-athletes in the league earned recognition for accomplishing a 3.20 grade-point average for the academic year while participating in one or more of the CAC championship sports. 

There were many standout student-athletes for the Captains academically this year, including two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District volleyball selection and All-Region star Josie Lucernoni and the Captains' first-ever first team CoSIDA Academic All-American and Elite 90 award winner in women's soccer's Carson Pokorny. This year, 14 of Christopher Newport's seniors collected All-Academic recognition for the fourth time in their careers, including United Soccer Coaches Scholar Player of the Year and All-American Gabby Gillis, All-American Sarah Culver (Women's Lacrosse) and All-Region performers Nicholas Baham (Baseball) and Julia Golden (Women's Lacrosse).
