CNU Men's Lacrosse Heads to No. 3 Salisbury for CAC Semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

SALISBURY, Md. -- 
The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will look to continue its postseason run on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Captains take on No. 3 Salisbury in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament at Sea Gull Stadium.

Entering the midweek match-up, CNU is 12-6 overall and riding a three-game winning streak. On the other side, Salisbury is 17-1 with a 9-1 record at home. The Sea Gulls are also on a three-game roll coming into the contest.

Christopher Newport punched its ticket to the semifinals with a commanding 20-6 victory over Mary Washington during a first-round bout on Saturday. Starring on both sides of the ball, the Captains forced 27 turnovers against the Eagles, while their 20 goals established a new single-game postseason record.

On an individual level, Dylan Rice contributed six points, including four goals, while Brady Altobello also notched a hat-trick. Overall, 12 different Captains tallied at least one point during the game. Defensively, Drew Cornell forced six turnovers and snatched four ground balls. Phoenix Hines also caused three miscues, including his 54th this season. That established a new single-season program record.

Overall this year, CNU is averaging over 17 caused turnovers per contest, which stands as the highest rate in the NCAA. Christopher Newport is also ranked seventh in the country in clearing percentage (.872) and 10th in total saves (258). On an individual level, Hines is fifth in the country in caused turnovers, while Lucas Barry's .500 shooting percentage is the 16th-best mark in the nation.

Salisbury also ranks among the national leaders in a variety of categories entering Wednesday. The Sea Gulls are fourth in man-up offense (.549), eighth in scoring defense (6.89), and 11th in scoring offense (17.22). The team's .708 faceoff percentage also stands as the ninth-highest rate in the NCAA.

Leading the Sea Gulls this season, Corey Gwin stands atop the country with 17 man-up goals, while Tyler Snyder is 16th with 10. Brett Malamphy also ranks sixth in the NCAA with a .733 faceoff percentage, and Josh Melton is 19th with a .495 shooting percentage. Melton is also 24th overall in points per game (5.22), and Brandon Warren is ninth in goals-against-average (7.33).

Salisbury and CNU last met on April 10 with the Sea Gulls notching an 18-4 win in Maryland. Pierre Armstrong and Zach Pompea each had four goals for SU, while Will Stockhausen had three strikes for the Captains. Scott McAneney also came through with 16 saves for Christopher Newport, and Malamphy won 17 of his 20 faceoff attempts for Salisbury.

The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to Saturday's CAC Championship for a date with the survivor of the York (Pa.) - Frostburg State battle.
