Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing outdoors on a beautiful day at the Eyre Courts on the campus of Christopher Newport University, the second-seeded and 24th-ranked women's tennis team cruised into the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 5-0 win over Frostburg State. The Captains didn't surrender a single game in the winning points against the Bobcats as they advanced to the semifinal round for the sixth straight year since joining the league in 2013-14.
Junior
Johanna Ranta-aho clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Jenna Lipinski for her second win of the day. Sophomore
Kara Ferner also picked up two wins on the day, including a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against Cherise Jenkins to wrap up individual play for CNU. The remaining four singles matches were unfinished after CNU clinched the match.
The dominant performance by Ranta-aho and Ferner in singles play was set up by a perfect run through doubles as CNU won all three matches by scores of 8-0.
At No. 1 doubles, Ranta-aho played with
Olivia Reed for the win over Lipinski and Kate Paylor. The Captains No. 2 duo of
Colette Gilbert and
Amanda Yermal also won with a shutout against Shea Przywieczerski and Sophia Staggers, and rounding out the sweep was Ferner with partner
Alison Burgess at No. 3 against Jenkins and Satia Harper.
With the win, CNU will now host #3-seeded Salisbury University in the CAC Semifinals on Wednesday, May 1. Match time will be announced later.
