NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Six Captains, three apiece for the men's and women's programs, will be honored in a pair of special pre-game Senior Day ceremonies in advance of the final home regular season basketball doubleheader at the Freeman Center on Saturday. Christopher Newport will host Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action, with tip scheduled for 2:00 pm in the women's game and 4:00 pm for the men's bout.
Prior to the women's matchup, the Captains will honor three senior starters in
Jessica Daguilh,
Madison Howdyshell, and
Zhara Tannor, who have combined for an impressive 95-18 overall record in their four years together. The senior class has reached three NCAA Tournaments, including a Final Four run two seasons ago. With equally impressive resumes, the men's senior class of Marcus Carter, Tyler Femi, and Logan Miller will be recognized prior to the men's game at 4:00 pm. Over the last four years, CNU men's hoops has won 98 games and, with three regular season games remaining, could become the first class in CNU basketball history to win 100 games in their tenure.
Both races in the Capital Athletic Conference have tightened up with limited games left on the schedule. On the men's side, CNU remains in a tie for first-place with York (Pa.), holding a two-game lead on Mary Washington. The women's standings also have a two-way tie for first between Christopher Newport and Southern Virginia, holding a slight one game lead on Salisbury, while two games up on Salisbury and Frostburg State. With all eight teams scheduled to make the 2019 CAC Tournaments, positioning for seeding will be played out through the final game of the season.
On Saturday, the CNU men will take on a talented Frostburg State squad that is 10-12 overall and 6-5 in league action. The Bobcats have impressed against the top teams in the league with double-digit wins at Salisbury and against Mary Washington while battling against the Captains on their home floor in January. CNU owns a league-best 19-3 overall record while starting the year 9-2 in CAC action.
The Captains will look to continue their success on the home floor after starting the year 12-0 in games played at the Freeman Center. Sophomore Jason Aigner has scored 20+ points in each of his last three games including a career-high 27 against Southern Virginia on Wednesday night. He continues to impress from long range, ranking in the top ten nationally in three-pointers made with 84, while shooting a program record 44.4% from beyond the arc. Senior Marcus Carter is battling the effects of a knee injury but continues to lead the team in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). Up front, CNU has been led by Cutch Ellis (9.3 ppg) and Savonte Chappell (7.5 ppg) to help anchor a balanced offense averaging over 77 points per game.
Frostburg State will counter with an athletic group playing under first year head coach Sean Brown. Daniel Alexander leads the team in scoring and is among the league leader with 17.6 points per game, but is just one of four Bobcats pouring in double figures this season. Lawrence Pettis is averaging 10.8 points and 4.4 assists per game while Terry Kenner has moveed into the starting lineup and is also averaging over 10 points per game. Senior Edwin Cole is a dangerous shot blocker and is nearly averaging a double-double with 14.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game this season.
Prior to the men's matchup, the CNU women will look to continue a modest three-game winning streak after double-digit victories in each of their last three games. Junior
Kiana Kirkland registered a career-high against Southern Virginia on Wednesday night and leads the CNU offense with 11.8 points per game this season. Rookie
Sondra Fan (10.7 ppg) and senior
Jessica Daguilh (10.0 ppg) are also averaging double figures as part of the league's leading offense averaging 76.1 points per contest. Three-point shooting has been pivotal for the Captains this season, knocking down 166 three-pointers to rank as the sixth most in a single season in program history. Freshman
Jessica Foster has led the way with 54 makes beyond the arc while five Captains have at least 15 made this year.
The FSU women's team was locked in a shootout with the Captains in the earlier season matchup, as CNU held on for an 89-83 win on the road. The Bobcats feature a pestering defense that has forced 400 turnovers this season. Leading the way is junior Victoria Diggs, with 59 steals, while also leading the offense with 14.8 points and over 2 assists per game. Amanda Emory has also added 11.9 points per game as the only Bobcat to start all 21 games this season while also leading the team in minutes per game.
CNU comes into the matchup with a 17-5 overall record, 8-3 in CAC action, taking on a Frostburg State team with a 14-7, 6-5 mark. Frostburg State head coach Carrie Saunders has guided the Bobcats to the most wins in a season since the 2009-10 season.
