LEXINGTON, Va. --
The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will open up its 2019 campaign on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Captains battle No. 12 Washington & Lee in a nationally-ranked showdown at Wilson Field.

Along with serving as the season opener for CNU, Wednesday's battle will also be the annual Virginia "Lacrosse the Nations" Cup. The Generals and Captains use their yearly match-up to raise awareness for Lacrosse the Nations, which is an international organization that utilizes lacrosse and other physical activities to teach important life skills for children in need.

Christopher Newport is coming off of a record-setting 2018 campaign that saw the squad advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Along with way, the Captains compiled a 15-5 record while establishing new program standards for points (424), goals (259), assists (165), ground balls (718), and goals-against-average (8.40).

Although the program lost All-Americans Matthew Crist and Tony Cruz to graduation, CNU welcomes back three All-Conference honorees from the 2018 squad. Drew Cornell and Max Wayne anchor an experienced defensive unit, while Dylan Rice returns after leading the CAC with 56 goals while earning the league's Rookie of the Year Award.

In addition to the All-Conference honorees, Phoenix Hines and Scott McAneney are back after picking up All-State nods, while Jackson Deal, Lucas Barry, and Will Cogan all started at least 15 games last season. Will Stockhausen also registered 32 points during the 2018 campaign while starting 11 contests, including the final 10 games of the year.

On the other side, Washington & Lee enters the game at 0-1 after dropping a 7-6 decision at No. 7 York (Pa.) on February 9. Against the Spartans, Jack Taylor registered 16 saves in the crease, while Taylor Witherell contributed a pair of goals. Jack Hodgson also won half of his 16 faceoff attempts, and John Broderick forced four turnovers.

The Generals, who were picked as the preseason favorites in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2018. W&L welcomes back seven starters from last year's squad, including 15 of its top 18 scorers.

Washington & Lee holds a 5-2 edge in the all-time series with the Captains. Christopher Newport won last year's contest, 12-7, in Newport News behind a five-goal debut from Rice. Meanwhile, the Generals won the inaugural LtN Cup in 2017 with a 14-6 triumph in Lexington.
