McCarthy Makes History to Headline Six Christopher Newport Women's Soccer VaSID All-State Selections

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team led all schools with six overall selections to the 2019 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State squad, released by the organization on Thursday morning. Four-time first team All-State selection Keiley McCarthy headlined the group of Captains which included three first team and three second team picks.

McCarthy is the first player in program history to earn first team All-State in all four of her seasons as a Captain and just the second four-time selection overall. Ashleigh Dota, a CNU Athletics Hall of Famer, is the only other player to earn All-State honors all four years of her career.

Joining McCarthy on the first team in 2019 is three-time first team All-State forward Riley Cook and first time selection in sophomore midfielder Emily Talotta. Collecting second team All-State honors were three-time All-State midfielder Carson Pokorny, two-time honoree in goal Haley Eiser, and defender Shaye Doherty

Fittingly, the Captains' senior leader on defense capped her career as the most decorated defender in program history after arguably the finest defensive season in the 23-year history of Christopher Newport women's soccer. McCarthy became the first defender to earn All-Region honors three times in her career when she collected third team honors this fall, and was also named the CAC Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to becoming the first player to earn first team All-State honors all four years, she is also only the second in program history earn first team All-Conference honors all four years of her career.

She set program records for consecutive games played and started after capping her career as the only Captain to ever play in 87 games. During those 87 contests, the Captains' defense has been one of the best in the nation, including during a record-breaking senior season. With McCarthy anchoring the back line, the Christopher Newport defense set a program record for goals-against average in a season with an impressive 0.53 mark to rank 21st nationally. She also added one goal and five assists offensively for a seven-point senior season.

Moving into the midfield, Talotta picked up All-State honors in her first season as a member of the Captains after transferring to Christopher Newport from VCU. The sophomore midfielder was a propellant for the high-powered offense as she finished 16th nationally in total assists with 12. She ranked third on the team in scoring with 18 points on 3 goals and the team-high 12 assists, which fell just one shy of the program single season record. Her ability to create plays made her a tough factor for opposing defenses throughout the season as she assisted on goals in nine different contests.

Rounding out the first team All-State picks was two-time All-American forward Riley Cook at forward. Earning first team All-State accolades for the third consecutive year, Cook capped another successful offensive season with 55 points. She earned second team All-American plaudits and first team All-South Atlantic Region honors after being named the Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2019. She scored a program record 26 goals and added three assists while also leading the league in game-winning goals with seven. Cook became the all-time leading scorer in points and goals scored during the season while also setting the program record for goals and points in a game as well.

Second team honorees were headlined by three-time selection Carson Pokorny, who wrapped her career with another impressive campaign out of the midfield. The only student-athlete in the history of Christopher Newport athletics to be a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America selection, Pokorny continued to dominate on and off the field in 2019. Carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA, Pokorny also set records on the field when she became the program's all-time leader in assists this season. She finished with 10 points on 2 goals and 6 assists for the year and earned the record-breaking assist on the game-winning goal in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Doherty earned her first career All-State distinction after helping McCarthy lock down one of the toughest defenses to score upon throughout her career. The Toano, Va. native made 81 starts in 86 career games played to rank among the best in program history. She helped Christopher Newport post program marks in goals-against average, save percentage, and shutouts this season while holding opponents to just 8,3 shots per game. The imposing outside defender also added a pair of assists during the season while ranking fifth on the team in total minutes played.

Finally, earning second team All-State honors after being selected to the first team as a sophomore, goalkeeper Haley Eiser becomes just the third netminder to earn multiple certificates from the organization. She joins Erin Wojtkun and Carly Maglio as the only goalkeepers to earn All-State honors more than once in her career after continuing to add her name to the Captains' record book. While leading the finest defense in program history, statistically, Eiser capped her own season ranked No. 2 in goals-against average (0.56) and No. 3 in save percentage (.855). With a record-breaking 15 shutouts as a team this season, Eiser was in goal for all 90 minutes of 10 of them and played the majority of all 15. After just two years as the starter, she ranks fourth all-time in career wins (33), shutouts (18), and currently holds the record for career save percentage (.847) and GAA (0.62).

The six All-State selections marks the seventh straight season Christopher Newport has had at least four picked by the state SID's. Christopher Newport closed the year with an overall record of 16-3-3 after reaching the NCAA Tournament second round for the fourth consecutive season.
