Carson Pokorny was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection on Thursday afternoon. Continuing to make history with an ever-growing mantel of hardware, Pokorny collected her third consecutive certificate after continuing her perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average through her junior season.
Already setting unprecedented heights with her skills in the classroom as the first ever first team CoSIDA Academic All-American in any sport last season, Pokorny joins Gibbs as only the second student-athlete in any sport to earn three Academic All-District selections. Gibbs earned the nod for the Women's Track & Field/Cross Country team from 2001-04.
With Davis Pillow from the men's team, Pokorny is the first Captain recognized as a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2019-20.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes from eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First team All-District honorees, like Pokorny, advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team ballot where first-, second-, and third-team All-America honorees will be announced later this year. Pokorny was a second team Academic All-American as a sophomore and collected first team Academic All-American plaudits last season.
The Williamsburg, Va. native has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Biochemistry major throughout her tenure at Christopher Newport. Pokorny has already been accepted to medical school and aspires to a career as a doctor following her undergraduate career at Christopher Newport. The three-time Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection has also been recognized as an All-Conference performer on the field three times in her career.
Pokorny tied the program record for career assists earlier this season with 31 helpers and has added 20 career goals to her docket. She has scored 71 points while serving as a mainstay in the midfield over the past four years for the nationally-ranked Captains, starting 78 and playing in 80 career games. That mark is tied for the eighth finest scoring performance in a career at Christopher Newport, tied with Dani Gunderson. She ranks in the top-five all-time at Christopher Newport in career games started and has played a major role inthe Captains posting a 72-8-5 overall record for a winning percentage of nearly 88%.
In addition to her aforementioned academic highlights, Pokorny is also a VaSID Academic All-State selection and was named the NCAA Elite 90 award winner during last season's Division III National Semifinal banquet, awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the finals site.
This season, Pokorny and the rest of the Captains offense ranks among the top-25 nationally in scoring while posting a 15-2-3 overall record.
