ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. --
The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will wrap up regular season action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when the Captains travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for a Capital Athletic Conference match-up at Seahawk Stadium.

Entering the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 12-4 on the season, including 3-1 in league play. St. Mary's (Md.) is 12-3 with a 2-2 ledger against conference foes.

Currently, the Captains are second in the league standings, while the Seahawks are tied for third. The winner of Wednesday's game will earn the No. 2 seed and receive a first-round bye in the upcoming CAC Tournament. The loser will enter the postseason as the No. 3 seed and host opening round action on Saturday against the loser of this week's Mary Washington - Southern Virginia bout.

For those fans unable to attend Wednesday's game, St. Mary's will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at SMCMathletics.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport is coming off of an impressive week in which the squad upended Southern Virginia and York (Pa.) in a pair of league tilts. During the two games, Abby Asuncion scored four goals and was honored as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week. With her performance, she became just the third freshman in school history to register back-to-back multi-goal efforts, joining Belle Tunstall and Annie Gehring.

Along with Asuncion, Courtney Fiest had three goals and two assists during the week, while Mauri Ware and Rachel Cooke had a point in both contests. Fiest now has an assist in three straight games, placing her one shy of matching the longest streak in program history.

Overall this season, Asuncion ranks second in the conference with 12 goals, while Ware sits third with 11. Both standouts also rank in the top-five in total points. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Marcella Sabbagh is second in the league with five defensive saves, and Olivia Davis boasts a league-best .803 save percentage.

St. Mary's (Md.) is in the midst of one the finest seasons in program history. The Seahawks have already matched the single-season school record for victories (12), which they previously accomplished in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Buoyed by an outstanding defensive unit, the team currently ranks 11th in the NCAA in goals-against-average (0.73) and 17th in shutouts (7).

On an individual level, Kelbey Egerland ranks second in the CAC and 11th in the country with a 0.74 goals-against-average, while her .800 save percentage is also the second-best mark among conference goalies. On the offensive side, reigning All-Conference selection Gabrielle Corder is tied for the league-lead with nine assists, and her 0.60 assists-per-game average places her 19th in the NCAA.

In 15 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 13-2 edge, including a 3-0 victory last season. Among the highlights in recent years, Fiest scored twice against the Seahawks during the 2018 battle, while Bailey Miller had a multi-goal outburst during the 2016 showdown.
