NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport women's soccer will be back in action at home on Wednesday evening, welcoming in Southern Virginia University (2-7-1, 0-1-0) for Capital Athletic Conference action. The United Soccer Coaches announced it's weekly national rankings on Tuesday ahead of the matchup, with the Captains holding position at No. 3 in the country.
Christopher Newport improved to 8-0-2 overall last week with a 1-0-0 start to conference play after a 5-1 win against York (Pa.) on Saturday evening. The Captains have now won 19 straight conference games and are unbeaten in 34 straight (33-0-1) dating back to the first CAC game of 2015.
The Captains have won all eight of the previous matchups against the Knights, posting an 8-0-0 overall record and a 5-0-0 mark at Captains Field. Southern Virginia comes into the contest having dropped three straight.
On Tuesday afternoon, the United Soccer Coaches poll was released with Christopher Newport hanging at No. 3 nationally. The Captains are also ranked No. 3 in the D3soccer.com Top 25 released on Monday, picking up one first-place vote.
Led by one of the nation's most elite scorers over the last three years,
Riley Cook, the Captains offense is firing on all cylinders again in 2019. One of Division III's top-25 scoring offenses with 3.11 goals per game, the Captains have scored 98 points, ranking ninth nationally, on 33 goals and 32 total assists. Cook, who became the program's all-time leading scorer in the Captains' last outing, leads the way by ranking fourth nationally in goals (13) and ninth in points (27).
Defensively, the Captains have been equally as impressive by allowing just three goals through the first ten games. Led by All-Region goalkeeper
Haley Eiser, the Captains defense ranks 8th nationally in goals-against average (0.28) and have logged seven shutouts already this season. Eiser has started all 10 games and has 30 saves for a .909 save percentage.
Southern Virginia has featured seven different goal scorers this season including sophomore Tori Wescott as the team's leading scorer with six points on three goals. Sophomore defender Holly Cunha has added two goals while underclassmen Sydney Kuhni and Laurel Storheim have each scored one goal with two assists.
