NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Three teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 will square off in the next three games on Captains Field, including two games this weekend. First up, sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins University will face off against 24th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday night at 7:00 pm, followed by a matchup between the 17th-ranked Captains and Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm. The CNU women will then host the Marlins next week as the home field for the Captains readies to host some of the best soccer in the nation in three straight games.
In tonight's neutral site non-conference matchup, the Blue Jays and Marlins will matchup as the Captains' cross-water rivals competes in the Captains Classic for the 11th straight year. This will be the first appearance in the tournament for Johns Hopkins.
On Sunday, the Captains will battle against Johns Hopkins for the first time since the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Prior to that meeting, CNU last played the Baltimore based program in 2007; the all-time series favors the Blue Jays, 3-1. CNU will also take on the Marlins for the 21st time in program history, with Virginia Wesleyan owning a 12-6-2 advantage in the series.
This season, Christopher Newport is off to a torrid start with a 3-0-0 record. Johns Hopkins and Virginia Wesleyan each sport 2-1-0 marks with their lone losses coming to top ten opponents. JHU lost to No. 5 Messiah and VWU fell to No. 9 UW-La Crosse in the first week and a half.
The Captains are scoring in bunches, with 11 goals in their first three contests. Senior All-American
Gabby Gillis leads the way with 11 points on 5 goals and 1 assist, earning National Player of the Week honors after a stellar opening weekend. Sophomore
Riley Cook has added 6 points on two goals and two assists while
Maddie Cochran has 5 points on two goals and one helper.
Defensively, CNU has been difficult to handle, allowing just two goals in the first 270 minutes of action. Juniors
Shaye Doherty and
Keiley McCarthy have combined with goalkeepers
Haley Eiser and
Maddy Belanger to post a 0.67 goals against average with just 12 shots allowed.
