Johanna Ranta-aho Reaches ITA Southeast Regional Semifinals for Second Time

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- As a freshman two years ago, Christopher Newport's Johanna Ranta-aho made program history when she won four matches in the championship draw of the ITA Southeast Regional and advanced to the semifinals. With two wins on Sunday, including a marathon battle in the quarterfinals, Ranta-aho has matched that historical performance again as a junior and will play for a chance to reach the championship match on Monday.

Ranta-aho will have a rematch with Johns Hopkins' Anjali Kashyap, seeded No. 5 in this year's ITA Regional, at 9:00 am on Monday morning for a chance to advance to the final. The winning player will face either No. 10 Heidi Sarkkinen from Averett or unseeded Danna Taylor from Carnegie Mellon, who will do battle in the other semifinal matchup. Both finalists will qualify for the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz.

The Captains' junior from Helsinki, Finland won her first match on Sunday against No. 16 seed Alex Iordache (Carnegie Mellon) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Then, in the quarterfinals, Ranta-aho faced No. 9 seed Jamie Vizelman (Carnegie Mellon) for an epic bout. The two went back-and-forth throughout the match, in what would end up being a three-set marathon. First, Vizelman captured a 7-5 win in the first set before Ranta-aho answered with a 6-4 win in the second to split. Vizelman pulled ahead, 3-2, in the third and deciding set, but Ranta-aho then won four straight games to pull out the match 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Elswhere in the championship draw, junior Olivia Reed stretched Beata Liberchuk (Carnegie Mellon) to three sets in her Round of 16 matchup, but suffered a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 setback. Rookie Amanda Yermal could not continue her stellar momentum from the first day and dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Sophia Strickland (Johns Hopkins).

In the consolation draw, Reagan Delp, Lily Schreiber, and Kara Ferner each captured wins to help CNU post an 11-5 overall record in the championship bracket heading into Monday's play.
