Rematch Set for Cerny & Reed in Opening Round of NCAA Doubles Championship

Complete Bracket

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championship Draw was announced on Wednesday, offering Christopher Newport University senior tandem Justin Cerny and David Reed an opportunity at redemption in a rematch in one of their few losses this season. The Captains will take on Caltech's top duo, Varun Shankar and James Wei, who represent one of only six duos in the nation to topple CNU's veteran pair this year.

The 16-team tournament will open play at 3:30 pm locally (6:30 pm EST) on Thursday, with the Captains taking on Caltech's pairing for an opportunity to advance in the postseason tournament. The winning pair will face either top-seeded Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger from Middlebury or Wilson Lambeth and Jordan Pitts from Trinity (Texas). The full draws were released on the NCAA.com website mid-day on Wednesday. The event will be played over the next three days at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, with live stats and video available of all the matches.

Live scoring of the event will be available here: https://webapps.cmc.edu/livescore/  -- the tournament webpage with more information can be found here: http://cmsathletics.org/sports/18tennis/index

Cerny and Reed are competing in their second straight Division III Doubles Championship, becoming just the second tandem in program history to qualify more than once. Eddie Glidewell and John Mook reached the NCAA championship event in both 2007 and 2008, representing the other team to accomplish the feat. This season, Cerny and Reed have been combined to win 14 matches including a 13-6 record in dual play. The CNU tandem has won nine of their last ten matches dating back to the trip to California over Spring Break.

Shankar and Wei, a pair of freshmen for the Beavers, earned an at-large berth into the doubles championship following a 12-5 rookie campaign as a pairing. When the two tandems battled in the California trip, Shankar and Wei managed an 8-4 win over the Captains couple.

A full recap and photos will be available at CNUsports.com following the action.
