NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team opened up the 2026-27 season on Friday with the first day of the CNU Duals against NCAA Division I Hampton University. The Captains earned a pair of doubles wins and two singles victories including wins in both disciplines for
Sam Halvorsen and
Gabe Smith.
In doubles play, Smith paired with
Rainer Christiansen for a thrilling 7-6 (7-5) win against Kevin Jorquera and Rafael Padilha. Smith then added a hard-fought victory against Aryan Arora in singles for a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) final score.
Halvorsen started his day with a 6-3 win in doubles against Ibrahim Carrington and Jude Killikelly while playing with partner
Matt Miller. He then added a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win against his Division I singles opponent, Killikelly to wrap up a strong season debut for the veteran.
Christiansen stretched his singles opponent to a tiebreaker in the second set and played a third set tiebreaker before suffering a 0-6, 7-6 (3), 10-5 loss to Kohei Konishi.
Ivan Ceric also forced his opponent to win a seventh game in the second set as Jorquera edged the Captains' sophomore 6-3, 7-5.
