Softball Hosts CAC Rival Salisbury Wednesday...Games Moved to 5 and 7 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport and Salisbury are scheduled to re-new their softball rivalry on Wednesday, but Mother Nature may have something to say about it. The Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader has been moved to a 5:00 p.m. start at Captains Park due to wet weather expected in Hampton Roads through the day.

The Captains and Sea Gulls have met 74 times on the softball diamond, and the all-time series is dead even. Both squads have won 36 times with two ties in the series that dates back to the 1989 season. Last year in Salisbury, MD., the teams split a twin bill with the Sea Gulls taking the opener, 9-3, and the Captains bouncing back for a 10-5 win in the nightcap.

Keith Parr's squad, ranked seventh in the country, has won eight straight games entering Wednesday's action. CNU is 17-3 overall and 2-0 in the CAC following a sweep over Wesley on Saturday. The Captains won the first game, 10-1, and then posted the sweep with a 9-0 triumph in game two. Both games went only five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. Six of CNU's eight wins in the current streak have come early thanks to the mercy rule, and the Captains have out-scored their opponents during the stretch, 69-8.

The Captains are currently third in the nation in home runs per game, with 24 in 20 games. Freshman Emerald Cheesbrew tops the team with six, and leads the nation in slugging percentage at 1.235. Cheesbrew also tops the squad and the CAC in batting with a .500 average.

Salisbury enters play on Wednesday with a 14-8 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the CAC. Margie Knight's squad opened CAC play on Saturday with a split at Mary Washington.

Video of both games will be streamed live at CNUsports.com/live. Live stats will also be available for the twin bill.
